When is Web 2.0 Too Much?

As we rush into the new age of internet marketing it gets real exciting when we learn of the endless possibilities of bringing and imaging our companies.  The biggest serge of visibility is coming through what is called Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 is really just a buzz term to describe internet socializing via community sites (YouTube, MySpace, FaceBook) and blogs.  What has become a phenomenon is that it is now a part of the general marketing movement of the world to exploit these sites for personal gain; and yes I have about 7 profiles myself.   :)

So as the world of business marketing runs to a new form of getting the word out there, all these cool sites that were known as social networking have become a an over cluttered post-it bulletin board that you might see at a local coffee shop.  When was the last time you walked over and looked at one of those?

Where jockeying Web 2.0 can be too much is when you are re-purposing your written blogs of videos on all the sites that are available.  As of today there are over 120 social community sites including blogs but NOT including forums.

After a while, you have become a Web 2.0 spammer of sorts by just dropping material anywhere you can.  Even that being said, imagine the amount of time it would take to maintain them.

Though I do teach all my clients about the uses of social communities, I assist them in working with the right ones that will bring relevant attention to there mission.  As you plow forward into the Web 2.0 initiative, look for sites that have heavy traffic with embedded groups within the communities.  Look for social communities that have a local and regional appeal.

Once you have set up your profiles on the communities that you feel comfortable with, you have to constantly work them.  Stay on top of all your content and try to add to your blogs 3 times a week and your video viral sites twice a month.

So in closing, Web 2.0 is a great way to spin yourself out there, but don't go nuts in opening 30 profiles.  If you do you will find yourself completely overwhelmed and most like will let them fade away.  Choose carefully.......
